“Clickety clack, heels bound homeward.” ~My Friend, Mac
Went to see my friend Mac today - he’s been gone fourteen years today. .
Mac’s friendship meant the world to me -- from the time that I first met him when he smuggled P.B.’s fries into the hospital for his wife Ellen and I, barricading our hospital room door so the nurses wouldn’t find us enjoying delicious french fries, to times when I sat discouraged about my life, struggling to find meaning to hardships and answers to questions I couldn’t answer – Mac was always there encouraging me to open my heart and to listen. .
He was a wonderful man, a "mean" cribbage player who loved to call mulligans on me, a husband, a father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and tremendous friend. .
Through all he experienced - he found forgiveness and love instead of hatred and animosity. He took the devastating experiences he had, including fighting in WWII, and turned them into life lessons, looking not at the hardships he endured, but instead how he grew as an individual because of his journey. .
I can remember as Mac lay dying, going to see him to say my goodbyes, but also to let him in on a "little secret" - that I was pregnant. Even though he was deep in a coma by then and very near death, he squeezed my hand. He was one of the first to know our "secret" and that meant the world to me - it still means the world to me. .
It is hard to believe that Mac died 14 years ago, today. There are people who come into our lives to show us life, to hold the mirror firmly in front of us to show us who we are and who we are meant to be. I am so grateful to Mac, he has truly guided me in so many ways, in his life, in his love and now in his light. ..
The tears are filling my eyes and heart as I write this.
Oh how I miss you Mac, Oh how I miss you ❤️ .
P.S. note the manure spreading tractor in the background - nice touch Mac - thanks for always making me smile. 🙂
