This is from 1990, poor Fred :( “It was now visibly evident that Freddie was extremely ill, so for him to be on-stage with the other members of Queen would only draw attention to his swift decline and confirm to the media, and Queen fans, his dramatic health issues. But if he didn’t appear, it would only fuel the rumours and lead to increased speculation. In the end, he made the courageous decision to collect the award in person, along with Brian, Roger and John, and when he walked on-stage to the accompaniment of ‘Killer Queen’ his suit hanging off him, swamping his gaunt frame, his hair thinner and dyed, and his hollowed face beneath thick makeup hiding any blemishes on his skin, no one watching could be in any doubt that Freddie Mercury was extremely ill.
Watching the clip of him on the Brit Awards, you can perhaps see, in the short time he is on-stage, a traumatised child as he once was, long ago, and one who recovers, as he did, one who has a wall between him and pain and despair, between him and grief. In that momentary appearance you see the child, the adolescent man, then the young man, and now the middle-aged man with AIDS. It was to be Freddie’s final public appearance and just before he walked off-stage he leant into the microphone and said, ‘Thank you, goodnight.’”
