Had this nice cozy bowl of banana bread oatmeal this morning! Topped it with a spoonful of peanut butter and some chia seeds 🍌🥜 dEATs- (2 servings) 1c. Old fashioned oats 1 3/4 c. Almond milk 1/4 c. Banana 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Dash of nutmeg 3-4 tbsp. Maple syrup or honey (depending on preference) Combine the oats and milk and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until desired thickness (~5 mins). Stir in the rest of the ingredients and heat until combined. Pour into 2 bowls and enjoy!

Time to step into the debate about labelling 'junk foods' with the amount of exercise you would need to burn off the calories. Firstly this info is unlikely to be inaccurate as it depends on your own weight, height and metabolic rate. Secondly 'junk food' is food. It may contain less nutritional value than other foods but it is still food and not junk. We don't need to demonize food, or shame people for eating it, who knows if it is an occasional treat or every day? We all need food, food for energy, food to live and if we burned off everything we ate there would not be enough left to make our bodies function. Exercise is not a punishment and we need to start separating exercise from weight and dieting. No matter your size exercise is a good thing to do, it keeps your heart and body healthy and helps your mental health as well. It makes you feel good and needs to be done for those reasons, not because you ate a burger. Last point on the anti side, this sort of labelling could lead to very unhealthy and disordered thinking about food and exercise and could well be triggering, for example for those recovering from eating disorders. However, it isn't as simple as that. Public health messaging is difficult and has to be broad strokes to include everyone. Not everyone is educated about food and healthy life choices, or has the ability to choose them and this kind of messaging may well be helpful in reminding people of the high calorie content and low nutritional value. In the echo chamber of social media it is important to show both sides of the debate. Some people will need to be reminded it is ok to eat pizza now and again, but many others will need to be informed about other options available. It is hard and obesity is an extremely complex and complicated issue but public health messaging needs to be simple so it will be impossible to please everyone. My message re exercise is easy, do it! It's hard to keep to a plan during the Holiday's but I find it makes me stronger. I either find ways to fit a cookie in my macros/calories or I just don't eat it. I know that Christmas is coming up and I won't track that day. If you are, I applaud you! Those days are meant to be stress free and made for making memories. I tell my clients that if you are going to look back at this day and remember how hard it was because you couldn't eat your favorite foods, that's not a good memory for Christmas. Because remember it's not what you eat on Christmas and New Year's. It's what you eat between Christmas and New Year's. And remember, you don't have to wait till the New Year to start your weight loss goals, you can start now. It's never too late to work on getting healthy. There's no requirement that you wake up one day and completely overhaul your life to be successful and you don't have to make it a New Year's resolution. Because I think it is... for the right person. . 💭 Imagine someone eating the left every single day, overweight, low energy and struggling to keep control of cravings. . Imagine if we got to a stage where they were now eating the right instead. . 👍 They’re saving calories and so will probably lose weight. . 👍 They’re having less sugar and so the cravings should start to reduce. . 👍 They’re doing all this with only a small sacrifice. . This’ll lead to some wins like dropping some weight, feeling a little more energy and not NEEDING the sugar hits as much. . 🔥 This gets the person pumped and ready to move to the next level which may then be reducing the sugar more, taking away some of the fizzy pop and introducing some healthier foods into the diet. . You have to remember that some of our eating habits are deeply set. We’ve had them many years and you turning up one day and saying ‘I’m not eating sugar again’ may not be enough. . Starting to work on these habits one bit at a time works. . This is why I don’t do meal plans with my clients. . 😠 Me wading in and saying ‘eat this’ just doesn’t sit well with me. . Will you even like the food? Will you stick to it? Is it teaching you how to eat better? . 🤕 Probably not. It’s just another plaster on the wound without trying to fix the cause. . For the last almost 20 days a few of my clients have been competeing a 30Day Calorie Counting Challenge! . . While the goal is to eventually lose weight, CONSISTENCY of food intake has be be tackled first. Calories have to be very similar day to day and week to week. . . A couple “bad” days “here and there” or in a row will never hurt if there is consistency around them!! . . As shown in the picture @stefanienoelc has been CONSISTENTLY TRACKING for much much longer than 20 days. For her, the 30 day challenge added some extra accountability for the Christmas Season. She has allowed for treats, but stays within her allotted calories as well. . . The trick... they are allowed 5 days where their calories are off with NO CONSEQUENE! 6 “off days” and the next challenge cost $25 MORE!! . . Unfortunately, in today’s #society #eating lots of refined #sugars is like breathing #air, it feels #normal, it’s a #habit, but a bad one at that. Most #people don’t see anything wrong with eating a lot of sugar or feeding it to their #kids on a daily basis because they don’t know it’s an #anti-nutrient. How and why can something be an anti-#nutrient, you ask? Well, keep reading and let me explain.👇🏾 . 🍭 First off, refined sugars (e.g. sodas, #candy, cereals, cookies, baked goods etc.) are what I consider ‘empty’ #calories, meaning these foods don’t have any nutritional #value to our bodies because they barely contain #vitamins or minerals, if any at all. Same thing actually goes for flour (which is used to make pasta, bread and a lot of other stuff) because they’re stripped of their #nutrients. Even fortified or enriched foods don’t contribute much because of the bad quality. 🍭 🍭 Secondly, to break down the sugars we eat our #body uses a lot of nutrients, vitamins and #minerals for the #digestion process. This is where the problem lies. . ☝🏾 We’re not taking in any vitamins/minerals from those #foods. ✌🏾 Our body’s burning vitamins/minerals to digest the sugars. 👉🏾 So we’re expending more nutrients than we’re ingesting. . 💡 Now you understand how sugar depletes valuable nutrients and how it creates vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The more sugar we eat the more we need to get vitamins and minerals from other, high-quality foods. . 🥦 Main takeaway: eat more high #quality foods with high nutritional value in the form of vitamins and minerals which are #essential to our bodies and #life in general. For example: fresh #vegetables and fruits, organic and/or grass-fed #animal products, nuts and seeds, ... you get the point. And taking a QUALITY multivitamin and mineral complex to prevent nutrient deficiencies also helps a ton. . P.S. these are just a couple of things that are bad about sugar. I Currently have my Fiance following a reverse diet, from a Calorie deficit, we are gradually building Calories up to reach his true TDEE ( Total Daily Energy expenditure). My client also my Fiance has done amazing in his journey to becoming a healthier version of himself no doubt and I am so proud . However after years of being in a Calorie Deficit he has stalled and is struggling to loose the rest of the body fat he aimed to. Even though he is consuming low Calories, he cannot seem to loose anymore without going drastically low in calories . Many would say his metabolism is damaged but infact his body has adapted to the decrease in daily energy consumption by reducing his TDEE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is however a way to reverse this and this method is called reverse dieting, if your unsure of what it is and want to learn how to maintain a healthy weight after dieting and getting to your goal weight I strongly reccomend 'the art of reverse dieting' by @coachmarkcarroll . You see when we consume less energy than what we need in a day, our body starts to use stored energy ( adipose tissue = fat) and even muscle can provide the body with energy which is why we should lift weights to promote preservation of muscle, this is what creates fat loss, however over time our bodies begin to adapt, the body has survival mechanisms it will use to Reduce our TDEE , meaning we will need to consume less calories to still be in a Calorie Deficit and continue loosing fat, so essentially my Partner @heavyb08, doesn't have a damaged metabolism nor is his body in survival mode, he simply no longer is in a Calorie deficit due to the adaptations to his TDEE, to continue loosing fat, the Calories need to go even lower, leading to a restricted lifestyle or we need to reverse the adaptations of a long term calorie Deficit by slowly building Calories up back to true TDEE. How many of you, have dieted to your ideal goal weight only to put all the weight back on or even more? This metabolic adaptation explains why, when you go straight back to eating how you did before at your old TDEE , you have a surplus of energy, use a reverse diet as an exit strategy and we can sustain this very easily ♥️

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH! So over the news yesterday was this, a guide and a proposition on putting more labeling on food packages. This time stating how much exercise you would have to do to burn it off. This is a load of rubbish and should not be used as a way of trying to stay healthy. For example, everyone burns calories different we all have a different metabolic rate, secondly, they are missing the point of how some of the food effects our body the more processed junk food will need more than a run or walk to reverse the effects of eating it. This is another way of over confusing the population and could give people wrong guidance on food based on it is ok because I can burn it off in 1-hour. Instead, lets, educate people on how to read the labels that are already on a food packet. Teach them that because something is high in fat and in the red it's not necessarily bad for you like they want you to believe. That actually could be a good choice depending on the food. As always this is another direction into the quick fix guide of getting healthy, but the bottom line is your whole life should be about health and education. I’m pro flexible dieting & always have been on this page. From my experience it’s the best approach for dietary sustainability. You SHOULD be able to incorporate foods you enjoy regularly.

However, there’s a fine line between flexible and just ridiculous. I see a lot of people going a little overboard when jumping on the ‘iifym’ bandwagon. Throwing up a bunch of fast foods makes for an appealing photo for the gram I guess.

But keep in mind, like I tell my clients, hydration, fiber, micronutrients, omega 3’s & protein intake should be the things you look at FIRST and foremost before you even think about incorporating other stuff or ‘fun foods’

If you prioritize these things first, you’ll definitely feel better & perform better. Plus your gut and digestive health will be in a much happier place, which I’ve learnt first hand is extremely important.

And I know for damn sure that if a client texted me and asked which of these two meal options they should eat, I certainly wouldn’t be choosing the Big Mac. It may be slightly lower in calories sure, but at what cost? You’re literally getting zero benefit out of eating it.
