Good morning! As I start my day snug in my fuzzy purple robe and drinking my favorite health drink, I want to share something I've been thinking about. I've heard people say they're concerned about becoming "reliant" on supplements. Or they ask how long they'll need to continue to take them. Well, how long will your body need nutrients?
Of course your body will rely on vitamins, minerals and other supplements - it NEEDS you to provide all the necessary nutrients that are required DAILY for your body to function optimally. Our bodies are consuming machines. What goes in every day is processed, used, stored and/or eliminated - and the cycle repeats EVERY DAY! "Can't we get all we need from food?" you may ask... I agree that would be ideal, and of course we should do our absolute best to eat healthy, but it's not practical with the lifestyle most of us live.
I love this quote by Dr. Hyman to put it in perspective: "If you eat wild, fresh, whole, organic, local, non-genetically modified food grown in virgin mineral and nutrient soils, and not transported across vast distances and stored for months before eaten . . . work and live outside, breathe only fresh unpolluted air, drink only pure, clean water, sleep nine hours a night, move your body every day, and are free from chronic stressors and exposures to environmental toxins, then you may not NEED to supplement.” - Mark Hyman M.D.
I've also read that in order to get all the nutrients you need from food, it would take all day every day to grow, prepare & eat food with no time for anything else.
As an example - this little pink drink I enjoy every day contains the amount of chromium in 9 CUPS of broccoli!!!! I can't even imagine eating 9 cups of broccoli once, much less EVERY DAY!
Bottom line - supplements are needed for optimal health!!! Even missing one day CAN make a difference if you have certain conditions. (Check out my friend's story in comments).
